  • Summer squash should be grown in well fertilized and well-drained soil. A pH of 6.0-7.0 is preferred. Start early indoors or direct seed in the garden. Sow seeds 1/2 in deep and 6 inches apart. Rows should be 3-5 feet apart.

  • Harvest can begin when fruit reaches 4-6 inches and continue until fruit reaches 8 inches long, depending on variety. Pick weekly to encourage more fruit production.

  • Squash blossoms are edible and delicious. They can be battered and fried or added fresh to salads. Keep an eye for powdery mildew, which can be easily controlled if caught early.
